Driver Roles
US truck driver compensated per mile driven; the dominant pay model in road freight.
A cents-per-mile (CPM) driver is the US truck driver paid by the mile. Common 2025 rates: US$0.55–US$0.75/mile for employee drivers; US$1.80–US$2.50 for owner-operators. Not to be confused with the IRS standard mileage rate (a tax deduction): CPM is gross pay from the carrier, subject to FICA and income tax withholding like wages.
