Recording start and end odometer values to compute trip distance.
Odometer reading is the traditional method: write down the odometer at trip start and end, the difference is the distance. The IRS and most tax authorities accept it when paired with business purpose. Combined with a dashboard photo or GPS, it becomes primary evidence. Less common today since digital maps and GPS automate the process.
