A mileage log is the contemporaneous record of each business trip: date, time, origin, destination, distance, business purpose. Can be a spreadsheet, paper notebook, or digital app. IRS Publication 463 requires adequate and timely records. Modern apps eliminate manual entry by capturing GPS and generating per-trip receipts; the user only classifies personal vs business.
