Temporary add-on to the per-km rate to offset a fuel-price spike.
A fuel surcharge is the temporary add-on charged to clients or paid to drivers to offset sharp fuel-price increases. Common in truck freight. Calculated as a percentage of the freight or extra cents per km. The IRS issues mid-year increases when fuel shocks justify it (2022: June bump from US$0.585 to US$0.625).
