Expense category

Accounting classification of an expense by type (fuel, lodging, meals, mileage).

An expense category is the accounting classification that separates spend by type in financial reports: fuel, maintenance, mileage, lodging, meals. It enables per-category trend analysis, outlier detection, and proper chart-of-accounts allocation. Digital receipts arrive with the category pre-assigned, eliminating manual coding.
