An approval threshold defines who must approve an expense. Sample ladder: up to US$500 the direct manager suffices; US$500–US$5,000 adds finance review; above US$5,000 requires a director; above US$50,000 the board. For monthly mileage reimbursement, the threshold is typically per employee-month rather than per receipt.
